„Swing low, sweet chariot. Coming for to carry me home.“

Upper-class culture—social, literary, and musical—played an important role at the Bonhoeffer home. That is defining the “Teatime at the Bonhoeffers” event series.

In this year marking the 120th anniversary of his birth, we will feature music that Dietrich Bonhoeffer came to know and appreciate throughout his life.
The first event focuses on his encounter with “Black Culture” and spirituals in Harlem during his year of study in New York in 1930–31.
Traditionals and spirituals express both the life of African Americans under oppression and their longing for liberation. Both in this world and the next.

Antje Ruhbaum, representative for popular music in the Berlin church district of Steglitz, will sing and accompany herself on the grand piano that Dietrich Bonhoeffer once played.
Gottfried Brezger will illustrate the inspiration that traditionals and spirituals provided for “Black Theology” using selected examples.

Musical impressions from Spain (1927) and England (1933–35) will follow at a later date. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about upcoming events.
